David and I had next to no time to get this cover done. I’d never worked with David before so I was super relieved to learn David was very friendly and a total pro.

It helped that David had created the original jacket and interior art for the previous edition of Larklight, so he knew the world and characters very well.

Philip and David played a big part in deciding what featured on the cover and their feedback was very useful and made the project go nice and smooth.

I briefed illustrator Nina Tara as my one year maternity cover at Penguin ended. I passed the project over to talented senior designer Jan Bielecki who did a brilliant job of ensuring the project stayed on brand. When I saw the book in the shops I thought everything looked lovely.

When I joined Penguin Random House the Cream Buns and Crime cover rough was cream and blue, with gold foil and no girls. Unlike previous Murder Most Unladylike titles, Creams Buns and Crime is a collection of stories and the plan was to make it have a point of difference... but I felt it was going off brand. Without the girl's on the cover and the bright background colour it felt a tad grandma cozy crime. But in the end it looked great, and all the additional energy it took to keep it on brand was well worth it.

This is my favourite cover I have commissioned David to illustrate. A lot of colours don't re-produce well when working with CMYK process printing... but this artwork prints so well! It's almost better printed than it is on screen, which is very rare. Oranges and purples can be real tricky, but David has a knack of selecting certain shades that hold their vibrancy. David is a pro and he's wicked at type too.

For this Michael Morpurgo re-brand I decided to go with illustrator David Dean. There were two dozen re-jackets needed in a very short space of time so it was lucky Michael liked David's art and that David was up for the challenge.

David required very little direction. I merely asked for the characters to be small, the angles to be dynamic and that he work around the shout line and author brand that was put together by Andrea Kearney. The title was hand lettered by David.

I'd always wanted to work with Jim so when I found out Jim illustrated Charles Dicken's A Tale of Two Cities I was a happy bunny. I went to Jim's site but was gutted to find a notice saying he was booked up till early 2017. I tried my luck and emailed him anyhow. Lucky for me, Oliver Twist was the first big book Jim had read from start to finish as a kid. Jim agreed to illustrate.

Knowing Jim was crazy busy, I tried to do as much research as possible and get him a fairly fleshed out rough. We agreed to stick with the quadrant corners that appeared on A Tale of Two Cities, with little scenes in each. The coolest thing I came up with was the pocket watch as the letter 'O'. I didn't know if Jim was going to get annoyed by my forcing an idea on him... but he way really cool and an absolute pleasure to work with. Thank you Jim.

Editorial wanted Fleur Hitchcock's new book cover to look more like Dear Scarlett and Saving Sophia. I created a thumbnail sketch with a layout very similar to Dear Scarlett - 2D, tall silhouetted on the left (bus stop instead of a tree) plus added the baby in a box and the two girl's finding it.

As for the illustration style, Editorial wanted something more flat and bright like Jim Field's Saving Sophia cover art. Not wanting to rip off Nosy Crow (who do loads of great stuff) we thought we'd better find a new illustrator. Freelance designer Nick Stearn (now Bonnier Zaffre Art Director) suggested we use Thomas Flintham which I thought was a great idea. Nick and Thomas did the rest.

I think it's a lovely cover.

Authors Daniel Kraus and Guillermo del Torro with a copy the UK hardback edition of Trollhunters cover I designed in a VERY short space of time using interior illustrations by Sean Murray.

I'm a Guillermo fan so I was very pleased to work on this... but only wish we'd had time for Chris Ridell to illustrate. Chris was up for it as he is also a fan. It would've been amazing ad we would've sold truckloads. Oh well, next lifetime.

Not a fan of the committee designed red paperback edition. On the hardback and trade paperback editions the title type colour linked to the device in the gloved hand.
